Your ‘Epic’ Learning

In assembly this morning, I asked the children to tell me about their ‘coolest’ learning moments from last week.  Year 6 put me straight:  “‘Cool’ isn’t cool any more Mr Rees.  You need to ask us what our ‘epic’ learning moments were from last week…”

So, with this minor setback behind me, I asked them for their ‘epic’ learning moments and I’m glad I did!

I heard about tarantulas and snakes in school, someone who had nailed grid multiplication down in an hour, an exited Year 6 who told me about her key skills homework and lots more.  Thomas told me how he had new targets set for him and that he was working on three digit numbers now in Year 2!

Here’s something that I thought was epic from the BETT show last week, which I shared with the children in assembly this morning. Why not tell me something from your week that was epic by commenting on this post?

  1. We have been learning fractions in year 2 and Miss Tonkin told us about a pizza fraction game that we could play at home. I asked my mummy to download it and it makes learning fractions lots more fun at home! What is better though, is making pizza for tea and doing fractions – then eating it too!

  2. It’s epic when I drop my kids at school every morning 😉
But then I miss them and its epic when I collect them again …

  3. My epic moment of the week was when I watched the MAD (music and drama) group show at the weekend, several SDS children are a part of this group but when my son and two of his Y6 friends came on stage dressed in drag to perform ‘I will survive’ from Priscilla Queen of the Desert with a group of lads aged 8 – 18 I thought the room would explode with laughter, clapping and cheering. It was a truly EPIC moment….you might like to ask them about it 😉
And as for epic learning moments, I relearn something every day when the children come home and tell me what they have been learning: every day is a school day!

    1. Wow! This sounds great. I’ll certainly ask the boys about this; the MAD group sounds a great thing for them to be involved in.

  4. My epic learning moment lasted two days! First Year 6 had a wonderful day with Dave the rainforest man on Thursday and even though i’d heard him speak before, I learned loads about rainforest animals and the tribes that live there. I even managed to stay in the room as the large tarantula (actually called a mygalomorph) crawled up the display board at the front!

After a truly wonderful day, the Year sixes were then tasked with writing a recount of Dave’s visit. They spent two hours planning and writing on Friday and the work they produced was truly epic as was their behaviour on the day.

    1. I heard lots about the rainforest man today. It’s really left an impression on the children. I’m really pleased about the work on Friday too!

  5. Esther’s epic learning moment from last week was spotting sculptures and understanding what a sculpture was for the home learning project.
Theo’s epic learning moment was the importance of using your hands to break your fall and not your nose! We both enjoyed telling Mummy and Daddy about the robot doing Gangnam style in the assembly.
